Title: Optimized Tooling Design for Sintering Polyimide-Based Composite Materials
Keywords: compression moulding, polyimide , mass optimisation

Abstract: This paper presents the design and optimization of a compression moulding tool for processing polyimide-based composite materials with abrasive fillers, such as synthetic diamonds, used in the production of high-performance cutting tools. The primary objective was to minimize the tool's mass to enhance operator handling while ensuring structural integrity under high-pressure conditions. Material selection, theoretical sizing, finite element analysis (FEA), and experimental validation were employed to achieve a lightweight design with adequate safety margins. The optimized tool, constructed from 40 CrMnMoS 8-6 steel, demonstrated improved ergonomics and operational efficiency without compromising performance, as confirmed by FEA and practical testing.
