However, finishing processes such as polishing, grinding, and laser ablation often introduce surface and subsurface defects that degrade optical performance. This paper investigates typical defects-such as scratches, pits, waviness, and residual stresses-along with their root causes. Advanced characterization techniques, including AFM, WLI, and SEM, are reviewed. Mitigation strategies, such as process optimization and alternative finishing methods (e.g., ion-beam polishing), are discussed. Experimental results demonstrate increased inspection accuracy and reduced time compared to manual inspection methods, complying with ISO 10110-7 standards.
