Abstract: Pump Storage Hydro Power Plants are a universal and competitive source of electric energy and of ancillary services for Electric Power Markets. However, inherent problems are encountered during their operation. The process of acceleration of a motor-pump unit from standstill to rated speed provokes shock loading both for the unit’s parts and for the electric power system. After switching on the motor-pump unit is loaded at fool load, which is practically not controllable during the operation, i.e. the motor is responsive neither to the changes in frequency nor to the occurrence of congestions and contingencies. In order to avoid these deficiencies, special devices are required. This paper describes a new approach for mitigation of the start-up process and increasing efficiency, reliability and responsibility of ternary pump storage units. The essence of the suggestion is a complementary, third sleeve added to known hydraulic scheme of a pump storage power plant.
