Title: Two steps approach for falls detection in the elderly

Abstract: The population of elderly people keeps increasing rapidly, which becomes a predominant aspect of our societies. As such, solutions both reliable and cost effective need to be created. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is a new approach which promises to address the needs from elderly people. Falls are a major problem for the elderly people living independently. According to many investigations, falls and sustained injuries are the third cause of chronic disability. Critical problems are associated with reliable fall detection and alert generation only in really critical situations. A two steps approach, combining fall detection by accelerometer and camera monitoring is presented in this work. The whole assistive process is organized taking into account ethical and technical requirements to such type of equipment.
