Title: Evaluation of Alternative Flyback–Based Converter Configurations for Li–Ion Battery Charging

Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation of two alternative flyback–based converter configurations for charging a Li–Ion battery stack with an energy taken from a single 330 W photo–voltaic panel. It is taken into account the conventional constant frequency operation of the flyback converter. The latter is aimed at working in discontinuous conduction mode and the evaluation made is with respect to the capability of the converters regarded to remain in this mode of operation. There are considered the classical flyback topology and a new flyback topology proposed in this paper. With the new topology, two separate coupled inductors are used whose secondaries collectively power source the battery load. The new configuration allows a wider dead time to remain available, which in turn makes it possible a longer on–time of the primary switch to be utilized in case of lower input voltage while the converter is still kept into discontinuous conduction mode operation.
