Title: A Comparative Study of Energy Storage Systems for Energy Harvesting Devices
Keywords: storage elements, energy harvesting, Li-ion batteries, super

Abstract: Energy harvesting recycles energy from the ambient environment to allow sensor nodes to operate autonomously i.e. without the need for regular maintenance to change the depleted batteries. However, energy harvesting still needs energy storage, since generated energy is not always present and when energy is present it is not possible to use it to directly power the sensor node. This paper compares two of the most widely used storage elements within a small power electronics, i.e. Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors. For this purpose, the power needs of the sensor node are studied, requirements of the storage elements are defined and their shortcomings are discussed.
