Title: Translation with a Face Keywords: translation, literal, interpretation Abstract: Traditionally, the relation between the literal and interpretation is viewed as one of mutual exclusion, thus invariably placing the translator on the horns of a dilemma: either strictly following the words, or being faithful to the “spirit” of the text. This ambivalence of the requirements imposed on the translator poses for him some specific and often underestimated questions. Are “free” renderings still worthy of being called translation? How far can one go in one's freedom to interpret the authorial text without being denied the appellation of “translator”? Does the ideal translation situation presuppose a text characterized by monosemy, allowing for unambiguous replacement of signs on a syntactic level (the ideal of machine translation)? Is unequivocal interpretation possible in the situation of actual polysemy of language? These are some of issues addressed in the book in its quest to shed new light on the essence of translation.
