Abstract: The study of the deformations of the Earth's crust and rocks allows filling the lack of information about earthquake precursors in the absence of reliable methods for their prediction. In the area of the Baikal rift zone, the insufficient technical equipment of the existing geodynamic polygons is particularly strongly felt. It is not possible to achieve sufficiently reliable results for the detection of earthquake precursors. Creating an automated, highly reliable measuring equipment is extremely important. Laser displacement meters are most effective for these purposes. They allow measuring of deformations of the Earth's crust, which allows registering and identifying early harbingers of earthquakes. The processing of the results of these measurements is also important for solving applied problems of engineering seismology.
