Title: The Bulgarian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation Priorities

Abstract: The Bulgarian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face many new opportunities and a lot of challenges with the Bulgarian full membership in the European Union (EU) from the beginning of 2007. This calls for a targeted and efficient government policy in support of SMEs which role in the national economy is steadily increasing. Economic tools stimulating private investments as The National Innovation Strategy of Bulgaria, National Innovation Fund, Entrepreneurship Development Centers, Technological Centers (Centers of Competence) are introduced to increase the results of investment in knowledge economy, lifelong learning, know-how and enterprises development. These tools help the Bulgarian integration in the European Research Area and the achievements of world’s science. Efforts for improving the enterprise management, increasing the innovation and improving the qualifications of the labour force are made.
