Title: Characterization of fly ashes from thermal power plants in Bulgaria supplied by lignite coal
Keywords: fly ash, lignite, composition, utilization

Abstract: The present work is aimed with the characterization of fly ashes produced from the combustion of lignite coal in Thermal Power Plants of Bulgaria in terms of their chemical and phase composition. This research is important in order to find opportunities for the utilization of this waste product which is generated in huge amounts and its disposal poses a risk to the environment. Coal is of great importance for the Bulgarian economy, as coal-fired Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) generate about 45% of the country's energy. Thus, TPPs are the main source of atmospheric pollutants, such as greenhouse and acid gases, but also of fine particles, so called fly ash (FA). The emissions of FA into the atmosphere is overcome by dust collector systems, however, subsequent utilization of these solid by-product is required to improve the ecology of coal energy production. Numbers of applications of FA have been established in practice, which are determined by the composition, structure and properties of
