Title: The effect of Sulphates ions on the pitting corrosion of Cr-Mn-N steel in neutral halide solutions
Keywords: pitting corrosion, stainless steel, halide solutions, critic

Abstract: The effect of concentration of halide ions (0,001  2,0mol/l NaX; X = Cl, Br, I) and sulphate ions (0,05 and 0,05mol/l Na2SO4) on the pitting corrosion resistance of Cr18Ni9 and Cr18Mn12N stainless steels has been studied using potentiodynamic polarisation measurements. The critical halide ion concentration [X-]cr beyond which the pitting occurs has been established. It is shown that the addition of sulphate ions to halide solutions increases the values of [X-]cr as well as of pitting and repassivation potentials of the stainless steels. The negligible effect of sulphate addition in concentrated halide solutions has been found.
