Title: Optimizing the performance of photovoltaic systems with battery energy storage through forecasting-based energy management systems
Keywords: BESS, economic optimization, energy management system

Abstract: The increasing demand of integration of Photovoltaic (PV) systems with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) requires advanced Energy Management System (EMS) strategies to optimize performance, maximize self-consumption and enhance economic profitability. This review explores state-of-the-art methods for optimizing PV installations with integrated BESS, focusing on forecasting techniques, market-driven optimization and control strategies. A comparative analysis of statistical, machine learning and hybrid forecasting methods highlights their advantages, limitations and applications in day-ahead energy trading. Additionally, the economic implications of energy scheduling are examined, emphasizing the role of data-driven decision-making in improving system efficiency. The paper identifies key challenges and future research directions, including AI-based adaptive control, cybersecurity and real-time optimization techniques, essential for the next generation decentralized energy systems.
