Title: Review on the Role of Green Hydrogen in the Transition to a Carbon-Neutral Energy System Keywords: decarbonization, electrolysis, energy transition, green hydrogen, national hydrogen strategiesAbstract: The transition to a carbon-neutral energy system has positioned green hydrogen as a key enabler in decarbonizing sectors that are otherwise difficult to electrify. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the role of green hydrogen in achieving climate neutrality, focusing on its production technologies, applications across sectors, and national strategies supporting its deployment. The study examines major production pathways - including electrolysis, biomass gasification, and photoelectrochemical splitting - and classifies hydrogen types based on carbon intensity. Key applications in industry, mobility, and energy storage are analyzed, highlighting the unique advantages of hydrogen compared to other renewable vectors. Case studies from countries such as Germany, Japan, Australia, the European Union, and the United States illustrate different strategic approaches to hydrogen policy and infrastructure development. A value chain perspective is also presented, covering the full lifecycle from production to end use. The review concludes that while significant progress has been made globally, coordinated policy, technological scaling, and infrastructure investments remain critical to positioning green hydrogen as a cornerstone of the clean energy transition.
