Title: Optimizing the fused deposition modelling process in terms of surface roughness
Keywords:

Abstract: For successful implementation of the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process, a combination of large number of well-balanced process parameters is needed. After years of research, the surface quality of FDM-produced parts is still an issue. In this paper, 16 combinations of eight main FDM process parameters are examined to receive a high surface quality. A design of experiments approach is performed to find the proper combinations and to analyze the results. Specially designed test specimens with six differently tilted surfaces were printed using polylactide (PLA) filament. The results indicate that the layer height and the tilt angle of the surface have a major effect on the surface roughness. Specific parameters sets are recommended for each surface angle of the tested part.
