Abstract: This paper presents the required testing of submarine cables after installation and the available fault detection techniques during their operation. This comprehensive testing is carried out during and after the cable installation. Submarine cables are used for the interconnection of the Greek islands with the European power system and the offshore wind farms that are also going to operate in the next few years in the Aegean Sea. Given the high expense of submarine cables, their flawless construction before installing the cables and before energizing them is of high importance. Therefore, these crucial issues are described in the CIGRE recommendations and the IEC and IEEE Standards, and they are presented in this work.
