Title: Snake venom (Vipera lebetina) modulates surface properties of rat liver mitochondrial membranes
Keywords: mitochondria; crude snake venom; microelectrophoresis; light

Abstract: Surface characteristics of rat liver mitochondria were explored in the presence of different concentrations of snake venom (SV) from Vipera lebetina. Toxin-membrane interactions play an essential role in the functionality and ATPase activity of mitochondria. The clarification of the mitochondrial dysfunction of organ-specific mitochondria (cardiovascular diseases, ischemia) needs the therapies, which are not available and needs investigation. The effect of SV treatment of mitochondria is assessed by electrokinetic, light scattering, lipid peroxidation and fluorescence measurements. We report strong reduction of the electrophoretic mobility and zeta potential of intact mitochondria in SV-containing medium. Biophysical studies regarding the influence of SV on the electrostatic free energy of mitochondria show lower negative values of sub-cellular structures compared to non-treated ones, which corresponds to the implementation of spontaneous process. Significant morphological changes of
